Where did the summer go? It seems that we were
just looking to discuss the summer activities and now Fall is now
upon us and it is time to look forward to events such as the Steak
Bake, Turkey Raffle, Veterans Day Open House, the Flag Day
Retirement Ceremony, monthly meat raffles and of course
Thanksgiving. Please refer to the calendar of events to catch their
dates and time. I would especially recommend all of you NASCAR lovers to be aware of the special event we have scheduled for the Race and Steak Bake on October 5th. There will be fliers out soon. I would like you all to know that while I was in Las Vegas last month I did visit Post #8. Everyone was very receptive and were excited to talk to someone from New York and not New York City. While there I spoke with Legionnaires from California, Texas and New Mexico. I was most impressed with one of their members, I'll call him "Willie". He was a Vietnam veteran and had a sincere message about his service experience. If anyone hasn't had a chance to read the article on the GI Bill in the August issue of the American Legion magazine please do so. If there was any individual who was affected by this, it was Willie. Willie, after serving his country, wanted to do more, but financially was not able. I could tell by listening to him that his education did not go very far however he was glad to have served his country and would go back if he had to. In that article it stated, "You can't retain people you haven't recruited." This is very true and this is what we must do as members, recruit and retain. Our job as Legionnaires is to help our fellow veterans and see that they get the assistance they deserve. Until next time, don’t forget, this is your Post, come in, volunteer and enjoy a great time....LISTEN FOR THE WHISTLE. Dave Plato Commander
