What do the Whispers do in Final Fantasy 7?
Understanding the Whispers is essential to figuring out how the story will change in the Final Fantasy 7 remakes. To put it bluntly, they’re ghost-like spirits that only the main characters can see in the game, and interacting with them will tilt the story toward the original game. An example is Aerith’s fate, where it’s changed by the Whispers, altering the story from the original version of the game.
In Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, it’s revealed that there are two types of whispers present in the universe, light whispers and dark whispers, where both have opposite functions. The Light whispers try to keep the story similar to the original game, and the dark whispers change the story and are agents of Sephiroth. We see both whispers throughout the game, but their impact is more prominent in the ending.
Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth’s Ending
The developers for Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth already confirmed that the game would end at the Forgotten Capital. For those who’ve played the original game, it meant that the ending would reveal Aerith’s fate.
After Aerith goes to the Forgotten Capital alone, Cloud finds her praying. In the iconic scene, the whispers start circling her, and as Cloud runs towards her, the whispers try to stop him. After Cloud uses his sword to push through the whispers, he can’t raise his sword, leading to Sephiroth getting ready to deliver the killing attack.
However, Cloud was able to push through the whispers and save Aerith from Sephiroth. For now, it looks like Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth does change Aerith’s ending.
In Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, does Aerith die?
The visuals flash similarly to when Cloud has memory problems, and then we see Aerith’s blood as if Sephiroth was successful in his mission. Aerith then starts falling over.
After this, multiple versions of the same scene are seen. In one version, Aerith has a sword through her, but she’s moving around normally, and in another version, there’s blood on her. In one of the scenes, Cloud is crying over Aerith’s death, and in the other, he starts speaking, but whatever he’s saying isn’t told. An interesting thing to note is that the whispers start moving in circles around the two, implying that maybe the story is moving toward the original game.
Sephiroth then explains that worlds and emotions have begun to converge, implying that both universes will meld into each other and that Aerith will die even if Cloud does his best.
The Final Boss of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth
After Aerith and Cloud accept their future, the final battle starts. First, many of the game’s party members face off with Jenova Lifeclinger, with different members swapping in with Cloud or making up their groups.
Once that fight ends, Sephiroth and Cloud start fighting, where then Sephiroth transforms into his Sephiroth Reborn form. In the Sephiroth Reborn fight, multiple groups and Cloud go against him, and then the action goes back to focusing on Cloud. In this part, Cloud goes against Sephiroth again, but this time, Aerith is there to help him.
Sephiroth is defeated, but the entire party doesn’t feel like they’ve won. Aerith then leaves, and Zack returns to his universe. After that, the game goes back to the Forgotten Capital, and Cloud urges Aerith to wake up, and she does.
So what happens with Aerith in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth?
Even though it looks like the game is ending on a good note, it’s made sure that it’s not what it looks like afterward. Aerith is only visible to Cloud while everyone else mourns her. After the final scene, Cloud enters the Tiny Bronco, where Aerith is left behind, watching as they fly off.
While it looks confusing, it’s clear that Aerith has passed away. How she died isn’t explained, but it seems that the events that changed in the Remake are combined with the original game’s events.
The developers haven’t shared much about this, so fans are theorizing about the ending. As for now, it seems that our questions will be answered whenever the final installment of the Final Fantasy 7 Remake comes around.

I’ve been playing games since before I could walk, thanks to my introduction of Spider-Man 2 in the family PC. It led me to more gaming experiences which in turn led me to discovering all types of genres. My favorite types of games are open-world exploration titles, and I can prove it through my save file of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.
