Who is Cissnei in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth?
Prior to Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, Cissnei’s only appearance in the Final Fantasy 7 universe was in Crisis Core: Final Fantasy 7, as well as the game’s remake, Crisis Core: Final Fantasy 7 Reunion, both of which were developed by Square Enix.
If you haven’t played either game then knowing about this character’s origins will be crucial in understanding the importance of her role in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth and how far she has come from where she began.
Early Life
Starting off, Cissnei was an orphan who was eventually adopted from the orphanage to be a Turk. Since this was the first time someone actually expected something of her, Cissnei took her training as a Turk extremely seriously. While this helped her polish her combat skills, it also stunted her social skills and forced her to view everyone as an enemy.
While her seriousness toward training led to her becoming the youngest Turk, the only friends she was able to make were in the form of Tseng, Reno, and Rude, three characters that even players of Final Fantasy 7 Remake will be familiar with.
The Genesis War
The Genesis War, which is covered in Crisis Core, is when the player first meets Cissnei. Cissnei befriends Zack Fair and works closely with him while fighting several Genesis clones at the same time. It is during this time that Cissnei starts opening up in front of Zack, including telling him about her wish to have wings to symbolize her freedom. This also suggested that while Cissnei was definitely loyal to the Turks, she saw her association with them as chains holding her back.
Later, in Costa del Sol, Zack’s loyalty towards Shinra is brought into question, resulting in Cisseni being tasked with monitoring the Mako Soldier. The analysis is disguised as a vacation that ends up being cut short when Genesis attacks Junon, prompting the two young fighters to jump into action.
Cissnei later contacts Zack, apologizing for ruining his trip. This starts a beautiful friendship between the two, as Cissnei continues to share details about herself with Zack, including her dreams for the future.
Loyalty Vs. Friendship
Cissnei and Zack’s friendship comes into question when she’s tasked with tracking down “research samples” that escaped, only later finding out that the samples were, in fact, Zack Fair and Cloud Strife.
It is here when Cissnei chooses her friendship with Zack over her loyalty to the Turks when she calls Tsung and tells him that the targets escaped, giving Zack valuable time to escape the attack of the Turks. She also warns Zack of several dangers, including the heightened security and Angeal Hewley’s presence while also taking it upon herself to look after Zack’s family.
Once Genesis is finally defeated, Cissnei is tasked with looking for Zack and Cloud. However, her search comes up empty-handed. While she tells Rude and Reno to also look for the two, she eventually has to move on when her search comes up empty-handed.
This concludes what you know about Cissnei before the events of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth. While she isn’t a major character like Tifa and Aerith, Cissnei is still a fan-favorite and it’s clear to see why. For more about Final Fantasy 7 Remake check out What Is The Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth Level Cap.
