Will There Be a Yakuza Kiwami 3? Looks Like It

RGG Studio’s Yakuza games have really taken off in the West, especially because of the success of recent games like Yakuza 7 and Infinite Wealth. However, while the recent games take place chronologically very late into the series’ story, that doesn’t mean players necessarily have to go back and replay the extremely dated original games, at least if new of Yakuza Kiwami 3 releasing is true.

Enter the Yakuza Kiwami games, which are remakes of the original Yakuza games with more content and extremely polished graphics. While both Yakuza Kiwami and Yakuza Kiwami 2 have been received very well, RGG Studios has not yet created a Yakuza Kiwami 3, raising the question of whether the game will ever be released.

Fortunately, an episode of Ryo Ga Gotaku TV gave fans detailed on what the studio has planned for Yakuza Kiwami 3, and fortunately, the future isn’t necessarily dark for the backlog of original Yakuza games.

Like a Dragon series director, Masayoshi Yokoyama went on air in an episode of Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio TV to talk about the future of the studio and the new game that’s in development. Although the main objective of the episode was to announce that casting auditions were to start for the studio’s next studio soon, Yokoyama also gave fans a glimmer of hope regarding the continuation of the Kiwami games.

During the episode, as first spotted by Gematsu, he stated “I’m just going to say, I think we’ll do a Yakuza Kiwami 3 at some point. I think we’ll definitely do it sooner or later.” Although this definitely doesn’t confirm that Kiwami 3 will be releasing, it does give fans hope that the continued remaking of the backlog of the original Yakuza games is still on the table.

Yakuza Kiwami was released in 2016 as a part of the 10-year anniversary of the Yakuza series. Yakuza Kiwami 2 quickly followed by releasing in 2017. However, since then, all of the Yakuza, or Like a Dragon games have been either remakes, spinoffs, or resurrections of titles that were never released in the West.

Does Yakuza 3 Need to Be Remade?

Now, the question some fans might have is whether Yakuza 3 even needs to be remade. Well, we think it definitely deserves the Kiwami treatment. Although the visuals aren’t too bad, especially if you play the remastered version with improved framerates that was released as part of The Yakuza Remastered Collection, the combat and overall movement is still pretty sluggish.

You have to remember that Yakuza 3, and even Yakuza 4, use a very old game engine. While Yakuza 5’s game engine is newer when compared to the older games, it still isn’t the same Dragon Engine that newer games in the series use. Additionally, Yakuza 0, Kiwami, and Kiwami 2 are excellent entry points in the Yakuza series, but the switch from Kiwami 2 to Yakuza 3 is very difficult for many gamers, which is why many of them jump to 6.

Additionally, Yakuza 3 is crucial to Kiryu’s story. While many consider it to be the worst in the series, it still continues the story of Kiryu, Haruka, and Daigo, all the while establishing some key players who return in Yakuza 4 and 5. Missing even one Yakuza game can confuse players with how connected all of them are. After all, imagine if a player randomly sees Kiryu running an orphanage with no idea of how he got there or the things he had to go through. Having Yakuza Kiwami 3 can help players play the game.

This concludes what we know about Yakuza Kiwami 3. Although nothing is yet confirmed about whether RGG Studio will actually continue the Kiwami games, what the Director said does give fans some hope that they might be able to play Yakuza 3 without having to break the enemy’s block constantly.
