Throughout gaming history, no genre has been as prevalent as the first-person shooter. The FPS genre has seen many shifts and eras thanks to revolutionary games like DOOM or multiplayer juggernauts like Valorant and Counter-Strike. Among all these titles are classics that still touch our hearts to this day, and in this list, we’ll go through some of our best FPS games of all time. 

One thing to keep in mind is that this list isn’t ranked, so no game here is definitively better than the other, in our opinion. DOOM Eternal (2020)

Let’s start off this list with 2020’s DOOM Eternal, the most recent game in our list. No discussion of classic FPS games goes without mentioning DOOM, and yeah, I know you were expecting the original DOOM or the 2016 reboot, but we need to have a serious talk about DOOM Eternal. 

Whatever DOOM did in its reboot, Eternal took it to the next level with more action, bigger weapons, and faster gameplay, essentially making it better in almost every way. All of this, mixed with, in our humble opinion, one of the best video game soundtracks of all time, makes for an experience that not many games can compete with.

Half-Life 2 (2004)

Unlike DOOM, known for its high-speed gameplay, Half-Life 2 goes for a slower approach that focuses more on its narrative. If you haven’t played this game, we won’t spoil the story too much because the story is something everyone needs to experience properly, so we’ll just give you a quick rundown. 

You play as Gordon Freeman and go through a dystopian city under alien rule, where you solve puzzles and engage in combat here and there. What sets Half-Life 2 apart from its contemporaries is its perfectly made environments, memorable characters, and emotional moments, making it so much more than just another FPS game.

Battlefield Bad Company 2 (2008)

Next up, we have Battlefield Bad Company 2. Unlike other Battlefield titles at the time, Bad Company 2 focused on its squad-based mechanics and its destructible environments, such as destroying buildings or flanking your enemies by breaking the wall behind them, adding new layers to the FPS genre. 

The multiplayer of Bad Company 2 is amazing unlike its alright story, but let’s be real, we all play games like Battlefield just for its multiplayer, which, fortunately, Bad Company 2 excels at. Whether it be blowing things up or putting you in some impossible situations, Battlefield has you covered.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (2009)

When it comes to iconic campaigns, not many games come close to what Modern Warfare 2 achieved back in 2009. The story has you traveling across the globe and getting into numerous kinds of combat scenarios. It’s action-packed, the story has memorable moments, and the characters are still remembered today. 

What’s crazy is that the multiplayer is also amazing, with well-made maps, satisfying gunplay, and a great progression system. Honestly, we can still see Modern Warfare 2’s influence on the FPS genre to this day, and that speaks so much regarding the title and why it’s so acclaimed.

Halo 3 (2007)

We need to mention Halo 3 because c’mon, the satisfying gameplay, the conclusion of Master Chief’s story, the multiplayer, there’s so much to love. Starting with the campaign, Halo 3 has so many memorable set pieces and story moments that it’s still regarded as the best Halo campaign by fans to this day. 

But, the place where the game shines the most is its multiplayer which set the groundwork for the modern FPS competitive scene. Competitive aside, its casual multiplayer was great too, thanks to game modes like Slayer and Big Team Battle, marking Halo 3’s place as one of the greatest FPS games of all time.

Left 4 Dead 2 (2009)

Ending off this list is the second Valve game here, Left 4 Dead 2! Unlike other FPS titles here that focus on PvP multiplayer or single-player campaigns, Left 4 Dead does both…kinda. The 4-player PvE game has you and 3 of your friends teaming up to fight off zombie hordes while going through short campaigns, with each campaign having a unique visual style and gimmick to go alongside it. The addictiveness of Left 4 Dead 2 and how many friendships it solidified(or ruined) has set itself as probably one of the best cooperative FPS experiences ever.
