Recently, there have been many comparisons amongst gamers between the Sony first-party newly released game Helldivers 2 and the Microsoft first-party game developed by the legendary studio Bethesda, Starfield. However, between Helldivers 2 and Starfield, which one is better?

Helldivers 2 is a third-person shooter game published by Sony Interactive Entertainment and was released in early February of 2024 on the PlayStation 5 and Windows. It is the sequel to the 2015 fan-favorite top-down shooter game Helldrivers.

Starfield on the other hand, is an RPG game published by the Miscrosoft-owned Bethesda Softworks and was released in September of 2023 on the Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, Xbox Cloud Gaming, and Windows. Helldivers 2 starts off a century after the 2015 Helldivers and sticks to the same formula, destroying bugs and obliterating mechanical soldiers. However, unlike its predecessor, Helldivers 2 shifts from a top-down perspective to a third-person multiplayer shooter that gives the players the option to switch to first-person while aiming. Gamers play as elite soldiers of the Helldivers team, fighting an intergalactic battle against the rising alien threats to save their home planet, Super Earth. 

Helldivers 2 is a multiplayer co-op shooter that gives great importance to the teamwork of players in completing objectives and fighting against unique enemies. The game gives the players an assortment of ammunition, customizable load-outs, and the ability to deploy Stratagems. 

Stratagem are war materials or ordnance that players can call upon during a mission while in enemy territory. Each player can bring four Stratagems to a mission, in addition to the mission-specific Stratagem that is chosen by the Helldiver Command. 

What does the public think of Helldivers 2?

Helldiver 2 started off on a strong note and even surpassed Palworld to become the number 1 purchased game of the week on Steam. However, that was short-lived as the amount of negative reviews increased exponentially shortly thereafter. 

The change in public perception could have happened for several reasons, the first of which might be the crashes that players faced on Steam. Secondly, this could also be an indication that players have grown tired of multiplayer games and wish to see more solo games released by Sony. 

Nonetheless, the game is currently number 3 in Steam’s global top-seller list, so it is still a worthy title to play regardless of the mixed reviews by players.

What is Starfield?

Starfield is an action role-playing game that takes place in a space-themed setting. The open world of the game is set within the Milky Way galaxy and the player is able to land on more than 1,000 planets and countless moons and space stations. 

As the player ventures into the world, they encounter numerous NPCs that can be recruited to be a part of the player’s crew. These non-playable characters may be of help in battles or carry items for the players. Each of the recruits has their own unique skills and abilities and the player can also be involved romantically with certain companions. 

As with other RPG games, the player can customize their character at the beginning of the game. Everything including body type, appearance, facial features, background, and traits are selected at this point. The chosen background decides which three starting skills of the character are unlocked. 

More skills can be unlocked as the game progresses and these new skills can either benefit the player or be a cause of obstruction. For example, the introvert trait grants extra endurance to players when traveling solo, but when traveling with a companion the endurance is lessened. 

What does the public think of Starfield?

The expectation levels were off the charts for the release of Starfield, especially due to the history of Bethesda with legendary RPG games under its belt like The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. The gamers, however, were surprised after the actual launch. There were countless bugs and the game was a graphical nightmare, which led to countless negative reviews.

Bethesda has been trying to do damage control and has released a roadmap of future updates that are expected to fix bugs. The news that Starfield will get updates approximately every six weeks has been highly appreciated by the fans and has helped the public perception of the game to become a little positive. 

What is better between Helldivers 2 And Starfield?

Best and better are always subjective. Some similarities between Helldivers 2 and Starfield are the option of switching back and forth between first person and third person. The biggest difference between the two is Starfield being a multi-universal game with the opportunity to forge alliances with the species the player interacts with, in stark contrast to the primary objective of blasting the aliens in Helldivers 2. 

So if you are someone who wants to play a shooter game with a few friends, Helldiver 2 is the better option for you. On the other hand, if you want to play a game alone where you can venture to new lands to explore and conquer, you should give Starfield a try.
